Why ‘I’m Sorry’ Is a Sign of Hope in America

An image of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama reading from a letter to the American people is now the most popular on Instagram.

The message was shared by about 2.3 million people on the social media platform on Sunday, more than double the number of people who clicked on the original photo of the President and first Lady on Saturday.

The photo has been viewed more than 3.6 million times on Instagram since its posting.

The letter, published on the White House website on Sunday morning, is titled “I’m sorry, I’m afraid,” a reference to the president’s statement on Sept. 16 that the U.S. is not “at war” with Islam.

The tweet, posted by Obama and Michelle Obama on Saturday, read, “I love you, I pray for you and I ask for your prayers for our country and for our people.”

The letter has been retweeted more than 2.6 billion times on the platform.

The President, first lady and first daughter have since thanked their supporters.
